Roku 1 Streaming Media Player : Inexpensive, but a solid streaming box.

Game-changer for tv and movies. Works almost equally well connected to hdmi as wireless (i have two installs). The hdmi direct cable connect might be a tad quicker than the wireless connection but i think the clarity is the same. The unit sleeps in a while after you go back to ‘home’ so it doesn’t need to be switched off per se. I basically like the remote, it is simple and straightforward without a gazillion buttons to confuse the less tech-savvy members of your household, and works fine for me, with one suggestion for improvement (see below). Hundreds of channels (some subscription, some not. That’s up to you) including the usual assortment of netflix, hulu, amazon, crackle, networks, so many more. The selection screen works well with the toggles.

Greatest thing since free c-band satellite tv back in the day. . The good: works as advertised. Some are worthwhile, some not so much. Once you sort through them and find channels you like, you’ll have more tv than you can possibly watch. The bad: not always easy to tell up-front which channels require a subscription/payment for content. No youtube on this model, only on the new roku 3 as i write this – march 17, 2014. December 2014 update: youtube has been added to this model of roku – you can download it from the roku channel store. The user interface is awkward, but hey, it’s youtube. A credit/debit card number is required to activate device, even if you don’t buy any paid channels. They will track your usage and use/sell that information. Won’t work reliably through any hdmi switch i have tried. Might not be the roku’s fault, some other devices have trouble with this too. The bottom line:best entertainment value ever for $50 spent, for us. If you have high-speed internet, get a roku today.

Great concept – easy to use. This is so much faster and easier to use than a tivo or a blu-ray player for accessing what i’ve learned is called ott or over the top content such as netflix, hulu+, and amazon instant video. I opted for the roku 1 as i didn’t feel having headphone remote capability was worth the extra cost of a roku 2 and i figured i’d try it to see if the processing speed was good enough before i spent even more to get the roku 3. I am completely happy with the processing speed of the roku 1. I suggest using the roku comparison page to see all of the differences. Access to tons of content, easy to understand, simple remote and inexpensive. It turns out it went from $48 to $39. 99 for about 12 hours so amazon was kind enough to credit the difference for my first one and i ended up buying two more but at less than $50 it’s a great deal. One big draw back is that roku has not provided the netflix profiles or you tube updates to the roku 1 or roku 2.

Was initially concerned with idea of wireless video streaming. Was initially concerned with idea of wireless video streaming from one corner of the house downstairs to another upstairs, but i consider the performance amazing and exceptional. That aside, though, i dinged my rating one star for the following. Setup requires logging into their site to activate your device on a roku account, so that meant a trip downstairs during setup,2. Which then required a credit card be entered in advance of additional potential services one may order later on-line. I don’t really do not like my credit card sitting around on vendor sites any more than needed. And i’d rather that choice be mine, and not roku’s. So my preference would be to pay for additional services as i go, and keep my credit card to myself. And that aside, based on the roku 1, i then ordered and setup a roku 3 for my downstairs family room. I went with the roku 3 as i wanted to hardwire via an ethernet cable rather than stream as wireless, plus i wanted full 1080 hd for the family room big screen. The roku 1 is on an older non-hd tv upstairs, and works well for that. I also ordered a roku 1 for my daughter across the country, which has also worked out fine.

We bought the 1 for our family room and are so glad we bought it. We have had expensive satellite tv and cable tv is not an option because access is down our street, so it costs big $ to run it to our house. With the roku 1, aside from the obvious netflix and other channels, we are able to watch greek tv through a private channel called “ellas tv” and we love it. It is much less $ than having greek channels through satellite providers and it has access to our favorite greek tv stations. I see that roku has access to many different foreign tv stations and movies and if you are a person who needs access to tv stations abroad, this is the ticket. Foreign tv is very expensive through satellite providers and many of the channels offered are not the most popular channels in that country. Many of these channels can be accessed via computer connected to the tv, but that is inconvenient. This little roku has made our tv life much less complicated, is very fast in loading and has not “frozen” at all.

Great alternative to cable/satellite. My family needed a solution for streaming video after adding another tv. We were using a wii to stream on previously. I got the roku 1 after researching all roku models. The roku 1 is currently selling at the same price as the roku lt yet it plays 1080p when programming supports it. Roku tries to upsell you to the roku 3 by offering a 5x faster processor (at twice the price). I am on a 20mbs connection and the roku 1 loads almost instantly with no buffering, the wii would occasionally buffer during programming and was slower to load. I considered the roku 3 only for the ethernet port availability, but the wireless performs flawlessly. I like that roku adds additional programming such as pbs and smithsonian channel at no cost. One caveat, being a business roku hides the cost of premium channels until you create a user account.

I’ve had a roku for several years but wanted another. I’ve had a roku for several years and have loved it. But as i had moved it on a tv in my bedroom and they seemed to have gone down in price i ordered a new one for the great room tv. Omg this new one is even better. Easiest set up ever, great hdtv 1040 versus my old one which while hd was 740. Incredible sound much better than my old one as this seems one capable of streaming the sound to the surround sound features connected to this tv much better than the older model. I’m not a techie at all but somehow my old one even connected to the surround sound didn’t seem to have the oomph that this one has in projecting the sound from the streaming to the speakers that this new one has. It’s also much smaller and sleeker than the earlier model. It’s not the top of the line by any means according to price but i’m thrilled and can’t really imagine what else i’d like it to do. Best $49 bargain i’ve bought in ages.

Of course it’s my second one, this one in the kitchen. And so much more efficient than my other one that only says hd on the unit. The remote is better quality too with a real center button instead of a depressed button my tiny fingers have to find. Now i have an apple tv and two rokus. The apple is great for watching stuff i’ve collected on itunes primarily. But it didn’t have acorn streaming and that’s what the rokus do, stream acorn. I am a huge fan of bbc, itv and the equivalents from canada and austrailia. Roku is the only one that streams acorn and this new roku 1 is so much fun.

Shows available at the press of a button. We gifted this roku to my aunt as she recently had surgery and cannot leave the living room couch for an indefinite amount of time. She now has so many movies/tv shows/apps at her disposal at the press of a button. She loves it and has begged me to order her another for her upstairs bedroom. She refuses to move this one and is already contemplating adding one to her guestroom as well. Very handy for those who do not subscribe to cable or sometimes miss their favorite shows. She has all of her handy video app subscriptions easily accessible and with not being able to leave the couch, hours of tv to keep her occupied. Definitely recommend this for those who do not want to pay for cable and prefer watching tv at their own pace and in their own time.

Roku1 does not support profiles in netflix. The product came faster than i could say, “ship it to me,” got it in less than 37 hours on a sunday at that. The product looks and runs as advertised, save for one very big issue, which i wish i was aware of before purchasing. Roku 1 does not support profiles in netflix. This may be of no issue to some, but for me, my main profile was for me, and the others were for my parents tv’s with this version when you go to netflix it only displays the primary profile. I had to delete my profiles and make the primary profile the one for my parents tv, so they could watch their old shows and christin stuff, not having to see my walking dead and other stuff they do not enjoy watching. This was frustrating, and i will have to spend the next couple months making our profiles work with the personalities using them. Setting this aside i am glad to be done with it all.

I had searched high and low, for a way to watch netflix on my tv, with a quality picture and be able to hook up to my old surround sound system. Products, like apple tv, would connect to the tv, but not my surround sound. I needed to have the rca connection (blue, red and white connector), to hook up to the auxiliary on the surround sound and the hdmi, for the great picture quality on the tv. Roku 1 had just what i needed and more. I love having pandora for music and the comedy stations and i’m still exploring all the other channels. Even, if all i could do, was watch netflix, i’d still be happy. The suggestions made to me, before this purchase, was to toss my 10 year old surround sound and get a sound bar and apple tv. Hmmmm, that would be a purchase of at least $500.

The roku 1 worked for me over the more recent versions because one of my old tvs doesn’t use hdmi. (yeah, old i know) since this used rca connectors,, it worked perfectly with my tv. It lacks certain features, that the newer versions have, such as the headphones, microsd slot, ethernet port, etc. It would also be neat if the quick buttons at the bottom were merely colors and could be linked to any app you desired. Since blockbuster isn’t as popular as say hulu (which would’ve worked well for the color green. ) that critique would be more useful if it were directly relayed to roku but i’m sure the companies paid quite a bit of money to be featured as an individual button (or at least, they should have). One other major drawback for this device is that it requires a direct line of sight for the remote, which isn’t major but can be slightly irritating at times. If you’re like me and haven’t purchased all new tvs, this roku device would work best for an older version. Otherwise, i’d just go with the roku 3.

The roku is a thousand times better than my stupid “smart tv”. I have two of these now i use on regular tvs and am seriously considering a third to use on my smart tv. The navigation menu is far more responsive and the channel selections far more diverse. The biggest plus over the smart tv is that every single time i want to watch something on my smart tv, inevitably it needs to cycle through some update. I have never had that issue with my roku (and all are connected 24/7 so it’s not an access issue). The footprint is tiny, the remote has very few buttons and very good range. Really, there is nothing i don’t like about it.

Great addition to the roku lineup, the right combo of features. The roku 1 is a compact, nicely designed media streamer. It may not have some of the bells and whistles that its bigger siblings, the roku 2 and 3, have but what it does it does well. The main features it does have are those that count the most; 1000+ channels, built in wireless, and 1080p video playback. It has a hdmi line out for hdtv’s and rca component line out for standard tv’s, making it compatible with virtually any tv. The roku 1 comes with a newly designed remote that features 4 channel shortcut buttons. At $60, the roku 1 is very affordably priced. ——comparison of features between the roku lt, 1, 2, 3:roku lt – 1000+ channels, built-in wireless, channel shortcut buttons on remote, 720p videoroku 1 – same as lt but adds 1080p videoroku 2 – same as 1 but adds dual-band wireless and remote with headphone jackroku 3 – same as 2 but doesn’t have channel shortcut buttons on remote and adds motion control remote for games, 5x faster processor, and usb hook uproku 1: i own or have owned the roku lt and roku 3 along with the roku 1. It features 1000+ channels, built in wireless, and 1080p video playback.

We are a roku family, with more than half-dozen different roku devices from various generations on various televisions in the house. But with that said, i really feel that the television resolution claims made by roku for these devices are misleading. This particular device, the 3rd generation “roku 1”, is actually a 27xx device (all 3rd generation devices were 3xxx, the “roku 3” is 4xxx). This means that although roku claims 1080p resolution, netflix will be quick to tell you that they only stream 720p to 27xx roku devices; they just don’t have the muscle for 1080p netflix. Worse, this device only has two outputs: miserable composite video (480i) and hdmi (480p/720p/1080p). If you don’t have an hdmi input on your television, then save your money and go with the lt since it also has a composite output. Am i the only one missing the additional outputs that existed on the earlier devices?. Used 1st gen devices seem to be the highest quality image available from roku without hdmi. When i did the real math, i found that devices like this one don’t actually provide more functionality than the lt, while making deceiving claims and costing more money.

Low-cost, but a solid streaming box. . I begun changing my first gen roku boxes even though they are all nonetheless working, but the chip inside of is much too gradual that they wrestle with specific channels like sky news, so i’m changing them one at a time. I very first acquired the roku three which is ethernet connected and is rapidly and as stable as my 1st gen types. This time i failed to will need the ethernet port, so i went with a roku 1 for bed room use and the wifi is robust adequate about the property that i rarely have any streaming issues. So, as a veteran roku consumer, it is really tricky to complain or come across faults with one thing that just operates the way it should really. I use it for netflix, amazon movie, hbogo and skynews. The picture is nicer on the new roku’s in contrast to the original kinds. The interface is also improved in my impression. The only two grievance i can believe of is that the roku 1 doesn’t allow you to select profiles in netflix as you can with the roku 3, as well as i imagined the roku 1 didn’t need a line of sight in buy to purpose the distant at the box, which is how the roku three functions, but my solution was to elevate the front of the box just a small so i could bounce the remote sign off the ceiling to get to the box which is decreased down than the mattress. Really don’t inquire, but other than that, for $fifty, you just can’t go wrong with this tiny box, and you get a good deal of bang for your buck, specifically if you subscribe to the services i do.

. Just obtained it now and set it up these days. Set up is fairly effortless, some ‘channels’ you can go on-line to set it up more quickly (like amazon). Pro’s – really versatile, there are so lots of ‘channels’ it receives, including the elusive amazon primary – the final solution i requested (and many other individuals) do not provide amazon primary video clip streaming. This does, as effectively as netfliz, and a full bunch of other individuals that glance interesting but i have not checked out nevertheless. Disadvantages: the electrical power twine is pretty limited. I could have utilized yet another foot or two of slack to place the box wherever i experienced hoped to set it. Also, would be considerably handier if the distant had qwerty or it experienced a very little keyboard. Arrowing close to on an on monitor keyboard to established up your accounts is wearisome. Some (like amazon) offer the option to go online to a specific url and enter the code, but other individuals (like netflix) are all manual entry.

We got the lt product for the living place and had been each actually impressed with how quick it was to use and with the photograph good quality. My partner and i just acquired our 2nd roku for the house. We got the lt product for the dwelling room and ended up each really impressed with how easy it was to use and with the photograph high quality. We selected the 1 this time mainly because we uncovered that roku no more time manufactures the lt. Appropriate away we the two commented on how quick it was to established up and start off streaming. Total set up time was 15 minutes tops. Just make positive you have a computer system handy to complete your set up. We are a stream-large house as we will not have cable. Equally the 1 and the lt have been capable to maintain up with our calls for. My only criticism is that the for each-programed shortcut buttons are not really useful.

I’ve had a roku for quite a few decades but wished a further. I have had a roku for quite a few a long time and have liked it. But as i had moved it on a television set in my bed room and they appeared to have gone down in price tag i requested a new just one for the good area tv set. Omg this new one is even much better. Least complicated established up at any time, fantastic hdtv 1040 versus my outdated one particular which whilst high definition was 740. Incredible sound substantially greater than my old one particular as this would seem 1 capable of streaming the audio to the encompass audio functions related to this tv substantially far better than the more mature design. I am not a techie at all but someway my aged a single even connected to the encompass seem didn’t appear to be to have the oomph that this one particular has in projecting the audio from the streaming to the speakers that this new one has. It can be also substantially more compact and sleeker than the earlier model. It’s not the leading of the line by any indicates in accordance to value but i am thrilled and are unable to actually visualize what else i would like it to do. Greatest $forty nine deal i have bought in ages.

Excellent alternative to cable/satellite. My family members required a answer for streaming video right after adding an additional tv set. We ended up employing a wii to stream on previously. I obtained the roku 1 just after investigating all roku designs. The roku 1 is at present advertising at the similar cost as the roku lt however it plays 1080p when programming supports it. Roku tries to upsell you to the roku three by offering a 5x a lot quicker processor (at twice the price tag). I am on a 20mbs link and the roku 1 masses virtually instantly with no buffering, the wii would at times buffer for the duration of programming and was slower to load. I viewed as the roku 3 only for the ethernet port availability, but the wi-fi performs flawlessly. I like that roku adds further programming these types of as pbs and smithsonian channel at no expense. One particular caveat, getting a business roku hides the cost of high quality channels until eventually you produce a consumer account.

Although it does what it is meant to do, get streaming movie from the online to your television, this just isn’t a graceful product or service to use. The set up directions are skimpy, and the guidance chat has a extremely long gueue. I hardly ever did get by and experienced to simply call sony support to resolve my concern by hooking up the roku to the recreation port on the television. Given that it has no on and off change, it can be tougher to perform with. The remote has some preselected buttons for channels you could possibly like to improve to your individual possibilities, but you are not able to. If you want to use an hdmi cable, you have to acquire it separately, for the reason that it is not provided with the gadget. And to established up your account you ought to provide a credit rating card quantity, in situation you at any time buy any pay out channels. Entirely, the roku seems like a cheaply produced income tool, designed for streaming income rather than purchaser gratification. I will likely acquire a further streaming online video gadget for a second television, but will consider one more company.
